Story

Earliest cricket reference on Alderney dates to 1922 when Sir Pelham Warner sailed from Guernsey with his undefeated Middlesex/England side and lost. Post-WWII cricket continued mainly against Jersey and Guernsey. In 1968 Sir Derrick Bailey, an Alderney cricketer and club president, founded Aurigny Air Services, improving mainland links and attracting more touring sides. A new pavilion was opened by John Arlott OBE in 1983 after the Grand Hotel fire of 1981. An artificial strip replaced old matting in the late 1980s.

Alderney Cricket Club plays at The Butes, St Anne, one of the most scenic cricket grounds in the British Isles with panoramic views of the English Channel. The club, with roots dating to 1922, hosts league and social matches, T20 fixtures, and visiting teams from its refurbished pavilion with bar, originally opened by John Arlott OBE in 1983. Affiliated with Guernsey Cricket; open to those over 14 for social matches. —
