Legislation came into full force on 16 November 2015 in both Jersey and Guernsey. Douglas Melville appointed as first Principal Ombudsman on 1 June 2015, term renewed in 2020 and 2025.

Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman (CIFO) is a free, independent statutory body established in 2015 under the Financial Services Ombudsman (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2014 and its Jersey equivalent. It resolves complaints about financial services provided in or from the Channel Islands, with jurisdiction over Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark. Jointly appointed by the States of Guernsey and the Government of Jersey, CIFO offers complaint resolution, mediation, and investigation services at no cost to complainants. Douglas Melville serves as Principal Ombudsman and CEO.
