Story

Inhabited since the Mesolithic period. Annexed to Normandy in 933 AD, transferred to English Crown in 1204. Post-1949 restoration by Major Peter Wood transformed the neglected island into a modern tourism destination. Lease acquired by Starboard Settlement Charitable Trust in 2008, extended to 2069 in 2023.

Herm Island is a small, car-free island in the Bailiwick of Guernsey covering 2 km², with a permanent population of around 65 residents. Owned by the States of Guernsey and leased to Starboard Settlement Charitable Trust, it attracts up to 100,000 visitors per season. Facilities include the White House Hotel, self-catering cottages, camping, multiple restaurants and beach cafes, and activities ranging from kayaking and paddleboarding to guided puffin spotting tours. Notable features include Shell Beach, Belvoir Bay, St Tugual's Chapel, and Europe's most southerly puffin colony. —
