Founded 1888 as Victoria Cottage Hospital in Candie Road; moved to Cambridge Park Road in 1891, then Amherst (former Girls Industrial Home) in 1898. Renamed Victoria Hospital in 1918; funds incorporated as Victoria Hospital Incorporated in 1936. Hospital operations placed in abeyance in 1940 during the German Occupation; in 1945 the committee decided not to reopen. Buildings sold to the States in 1946 for £10,932 and funds invested; investment income now distributed as medical grants. The private ward at Princess Elizabeth Hospital was named Victoria Wing in commemoration.
Victoria Hospital Incorporated (VHI) is a Guernsey registered charity (CH107) that traces its origins to Victoria Cottage Hospital, founded in 1888. Following the German Occupation the hospital did not reopen; its funds were invested and the income is now distributed as grants to Bailiwick of Guernsey residents for medical and medically-related expenses. Grants cover medical bills, equipment, St John Ambulance costs, travel for off-island treatment, dental costs (non-cosmetic), respite care, and play school fees. The committee meets six times a year; emergency grants are available immediately. —
