Story

Built by Nicolas Maingy as 'Le Mont' at the corner of Mont Durant and Petite Marche. First inhabited by Lt Gov Major General John Small (1793-96). Once owned by privateer Jean Allaire. Became Government House permanently in 1925 when purchased by the Crown. Ownership transferred to the States of Guernsey in 1948. Requisitioned by the Third Reich during WWII as residence of the German Kommandant of Guernsey.

Government House is the official residence of the Lieutenant-Governor, the Crown's personal representative in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Situated on The Queen's Road in St Peter Port, the estate covers approximately 10 acres of parkland and landscaped gardens. The house hosts Royal visits, investitures, honours ceremonies, garden parties, and community events. The Governor role traces back to 1198; the Lieutenant-Governor post was established c.1486. The building became Government House permanently in 1925 and passed to States of Guernsey ownership in 1948.
