St Anne's Church

Churchyard dates to at least the 7th century. Built by Rev. Canon John Le Mesurier (son of last Hereditary Governor of Alderney) in memory of his parents at a cost of £8,000. Became archetype for six other churches by the same architect.

Originally served as both parish church and garrison church during mid-19th century fortification of Alderney. Used as storage by German forces during WWII with a machine gun post in the belfry; graffiti from the occupation is still visible. Restored and rededicated in 1953.

St Anne's Church is a Church of England parish church in St Anne, Alderney, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and consecrated in 1850. Known as 'the Cathedral of the Channel Islands', it is built in a cruciform transitional Norman to Early English style using local granite with Caen stone dressings. The church was used as a German store during WWII with a machine gun post in the belfry; German graffiti remains visible in the stonework. Restored and rededicated in 1953, it houses a full peal of 12 bells and is open daily, free of charge. — about this text
